The photojournalist Renée C. Byer will present in Sofia her world-wide exhibition Living On A Dollar A Day: The Lives and Faces of the World’s Poor

UniCredit Studio Gallery for Modern Art presents an unique photography exhibition of the Pulitzer Prize Finalist Renée C. Byer.

She will host in person the opening of the exhibition Living On A Dollar A Day: The Lives and Faces of the World’s Poor on 20 May. The exhibition will be displayed until 10 June in the Head Office of the Bank at Sveta Nedelya 7 sq.

According to the World Bank almost one in six people in the world live below the poverty threshold and one billion people live on a dollar or less a day.

This great group of people is the subject matter of the book Living on a Dollar a Day: The Lives and Faces of the World’s Poor by Thomas Nazario, and Renée C. Byer is the source of the exposure.

“Unfairness in the human condition can only be remedied when people everywhere care” - this message of the 14th Dalai Lama is chosen by Renée C. Byer for a foreword of the book.

People are dying. People are suffering for no reason. There are enough resources in this world for everyone. Why must this misery continue?, - Byer comments on the selection of the topic of the exhibition.

Rene has visited ten countries on four continents to illuminate the faces of extreme poverty and to prove that the human spirit transcends even the worst deprivation.

"In Dharamsala, I photographed a 22-year-old mother in a slum settlement who was starving her child so she could use her to beg on the streets. In this way the mother was earning money to feed her other children. The child was two years old and weighed nine pounds. Sacrificing one child to save your others is almost unimaginable. This photograph is so searing that I fear you will dismiss it as something alien, something so outside your experience that it doesn’t feel real“, said Rene for one of the photographs.

She will open the exhibition Living on a Dollar a Day: The Lives and Faces of the World’s Poor on 20 May at 18:30 in the Head Office of UniCredit Bulbank at Sveta Nedelya 7.

Renée C. Byer is visiting Bulgaria by invitation of UNESCO and the Council of Women in Business in Bulgaria and she participates in the forthcoming Global Women Leaders' Forum (18-20 May 2016, Sofia).

In the schedule of the event Rene will discuss the issue of the women in the culture and in the media.

Renée C. Byer is an award-winning American documentary photojournalist. She was born in 1958 in Yonkers, New York). In 1980 she graduated cum laude from Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois.

She has more than 20 years of experience in the media industry. For her achievements she has got many awards - from the National Press Photographers Association, Society of News Design, Associated Press, The Best from the West - a photo and design contest, etc.

Renée C. Byer has worked for some of the best daily papers in the USA. Since 2003 she works as a photojournalist for the storied Sacramento Bee. Before that she worked for Seattle Post-Intelligencer, where one of her photographs won the Dart award for victims of violence.

In 2007 she won the Pulitzer Prize for her portrayal of a single mother and her small son who lost his battle with cancer, entitled "A Mother's Journey". The prize is in the category Feature Photography.
