Machina - Secrets from the Box is the seventh exhibition hosted by the gallery. The opening is scheduled for 25 March – two days before the International Day of Theatre.
UniCredit Studio gallery is opening a new exhibition in its art space – Machina - Secrets from the Box. The author Ognyana Serafimova has been awarded with the special award of Stoyan Kambarev Foundation and UniCredit Bulbank for her stage design of the productions “A Doll's House” and “Visiting the Father”, directed by Kris Sharkov.
The name of the exhibition, Machina - Secrets from the Box, suggests to the audience that they can get a feel of the magic of theatre by getting a glimpse behind the curtains. Deus ex machina in Latin means "god from the machine" and it is a calque from the Greek “από μηχανής θεός”, (pronounced “apo mechanes theos”). It originates from ancient Greek and Roman theatre where one or several gods used to be brought down on stage with the help of a crane (mechane) in order to put an end to a deadlock. Thus, “god comes from the machine”.
Machina - Secrets from the Box follows through the creative quest of Ognyana Serafimova in stage design, performance, painting, installations and interactive costume design. The author presents photos from productions, costumes and her own art works.
The theatre projects presented in UniCredit Studio include King Lear of the Plovdiv Drama Theatre “Nikolay Masalitinov” and The Magic Tinder of Varna Puppet Theatre. Both productions are nominated for Icarus 2013 Sofia Theatre Forum Awards.
Ognyana Serafimova graduated in Stage Design at the National Art Academy in 2007. Two years later she also obtained a master’s degree in Stage Design for Puppet Theatre in 2009. She graduated Dobri Hristov National Art School in Varna. Her artistic biography includes 14 theatre and film projects, participation in over 10 collective exhibitions and 7 nominations and prestigious awards.
The gallery for modern art UniCredit Studio opened doors in January 2012. Machina - Secrets from the Box is the seventh exhibition hosted by the gallery.
Bulgaria was selected among more than 20 other European countries to host the first UniCredit Studio after the gallery established in Italy. The mission of the studio is to present young Bulgarian and international authors and to provide a platform for their modern art.
The exhibition Machina - Secrets from the Box will be open to the public from 25 March to 25 April 2013, free admission.
