UniCredit Bulbank’s Employees plant more than 1,300 willows in Struma river valley, Vitosha natural park

Around 300 bank employees and their families participated in the planting of the trees

Last Saturday around 300 employees of UniCredit Bulbank and their families planted a total of 1,300 willows and some 1,800 alder buckthorns in Vitosha Park, near the village of Bosnek.

Helped by their families, the bank employees showed professionalism also in planting and thanks to their voluntary work the recovery of the plantations of the typical for the Vitosha mountain white willow and alder buckthorn will be supported.

“Vitosha Natural Park’s Directorate is extremely thankful for the partnership with UniCredit Bulbank for a fifth year now. The help from the bank employees this year came in the right moment and contributed to the completion of our activities for recovery of the vegetation in the valley of the Strouma River. We hope that in ten years’ time the visitors of the Natural Park will spend their free time under the shadows of the newly planted willows“, said Toma Belev, Director of Vitosha Natural Park and Chairman of the Association of the Parks in Bulgaria.

The initiative is part of the National Green Program of UniCredit Bulbank during which every year the bank implements environmental projects. When the program was launched in 2008 nearly 400 decares of forests were planted near Stara Zagora and over 30 km of main tourist alleys in the Vitosha Mountain were restored – from Aleko Hut to the village of Bistritsa along the Yanchovska and the Bistrishka rivers.

In 2009 the Bank financed the recovery of an eco-path near the village of Borino, close to the Devil’s Bridge rock sight.

Last year together with the Bulgarian Charities Aid Foundation, the Bank organized a competition for environmental project, which was won by the National Parks Association – thus the Bank financed with BGN 5 thousand the purchase of phototraps to watch animal species and identify their habitats in six parks.

At the same time the Bank started a large-scale campaign for abandoning paper statements and their replacement with electronic ones. Around a month ago the Bank made another step to a greener nature announcing that it will use only recycled paper for its advertising materials.
