Bulgarian households' indebtedness is gradually decreasing

News

Mortgage loans in Bulgaria account for 45% of households' total liabilities;

The average gross monthly salary in Bulgaria has been growing steadily, almost tripling over the last 10 years, and has reached EUR 420.

In 2015 the indebtedness of Bulgarian households will reach 25% of GDP following a gradual decrease of a total of 1 % over 2013 and 2014. This is one of the main conclusions from the latest UniCredit's analysis on the CEE region, presented at the Annual meeting of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in Warsaw. The peak in new loan agreements was in 2008 when the liabilities of the Bulgarians represented 30.4% of GDP.

Over the last years mortgage loans have outpaced customer loans (with the exception of Russia and Turkey). In Austria, Germany and Italy housing loans have reached 34% of GDP, against 17% in CEE. Mortgage loans account for 45% of the total households' liabilities, while the remaining 55% are distributed among customer loans, overdrafts, credit cards and leasing. The weakest penetration of mortgage loans is observed in Russia where they account for only 4% of households' liabilities. Last year UniCredit provided households with loans in the total amount of EUR 28 billion and attracted deposits in the amount of EUR 25 billion.

While Bulgarian households' liabilities have been gradually decreasing, the net financial wealth per capita has grown 4 times in the course of the last 10 years. It is expected that in 2014 this indicator will reach an average of EUR 2 301 per capita.

UniCredit's analyzers expect that this year the Bulgarian GDP per capita will reach EUR 5 585. This indicator has doubled in comparison with the value it had 10 years ago.
